Top 5 SUVs

SUVs are becoming more and more popular on UK roads. They offer a higher driving position and better ground clearance giving you a better view of the road and smoother driving, off-road or on particularly potholed roads. Their spacious interior has room for the whole family and all their belongings.

With a growing range available on the market we’ve rounded up our top five picks. Check them out below:

1. Nissan Qashqai

nissan qasqai best suv

Nissan are a Japanese brand known for great quality cars across the market, from their small city car, the Micra, through to large SUVs and people carriers.

The Qashqai is perhaps their best known SUV and has been on the market for over 12 years, although it’s now in its second generation. With six spec ranges; Visia, Acenta Premium, N-Connecta, N-Tech, Tekna and Tekna +, all available with a petrol or diesel engine there’s sure to be a Qashqai that fits all your needs.

There’s plenty of space in the boot, and apart from the entry-level Visia all models come with a false boot floor that you can raise for separate underfloor storage or use part as a divider to stop your shopping rolling away.

Versions are also available with a panoramic sunroof which gives you and your passengers a lot of light and some great views, although this does eat into the headroom which is something to consider if you have older children or are expecting to have a lot of adult passengers.

If you’re looking for your next family SUV then the Qashqai is a budget friendly option that ticks all the boxes.

Sitting in the middle of the more compact XC40  and larger XC90, the XC60 is a great mid-size family SUV that is comfortable, safe and easy to drive and has a What Car? reliability rating of 97.7%.

The XC60 combines the safety you expect from Volvo with a spacious and stylish interior, and even entry-level models include climate control, adjustable leather seats and a Sat Nav.

On the top of the range diesel and petrol models a T8 Twin Engine Hybrid combines the T5 petrol engine with an electric motor and battery pack that pushes the power to 385 bhp and can do 0-62 mph in under five seconds. The T8, in fact, won Best Premium Hybrid Car of the Year at the 2018 Express New Car Awards. Despite the power, the XC60 has a quiet drive.

Mercedes-Benz is a brand that’s known for their premium cars. Although they’re better known for their hatchbacks like the A Class, and saloons like the C Class Mercedes-Benz also have a wide range of SUVs.

The GLC is a premium SUV that pairs the luxury you expect from a Mercedes with the drive and power you look for in an SUV.

The entire range received a facelift in 2019, with LED High Performance headlamps as standard, new-look tailpipe trims at the rear and options that include a large touch screen centre console.

The comfortable interior is combined with AGILITY CONTROL suspension as standard to provide you with the smoothest ride possible. With a boot space of nearly 550 litres not only will all your passengers be comfortable but so will their luggage.

The GLC is also available in a Coupe version if you’re looking for something that looks a little sleeker and less like your standard SUV. Although this comes at the cost of boot space and headroom for the rear seats.

4. Peugeot 3008

peugeot 3008 best suv

Formed over 200 years ago Peugeot is one of the manufacturers we named as our top 5 French brands for their rich racing history and the size and reach of the brand.

In recent years Peugeot has revamped many of their models to ensure they are competitive on today’s market, and the 3008 is no exception.

Unlike its high-riding MPV predecessor the newest 3008 is a fully fledges SUV which stands out for its unique design, high-quality build and stylish interior.

Although the 3008 doesn’t have four-wheel drive the all-weather tyres and clever traction provide great grip and the car handles well even on the sharpest of corners. It also has a five star Euro NCAP crash test rating.

Across all models of the 3008 Peugeot include their 12.3 inch ‘i-Cockpit’ digital instrument display, unlike other brands who only include their digital cockpits on premium models.

Efficient engines in both petrol and diesel mean the 3008 has low running costs and coupled with their What Car? reliability rating of at least 97% across the range makes the 3008 great value for your money.

In January the range of traditional petrol and diesel engines were also joined by a plug-in hybrid model, with two hybrid variants to choose from. There’s a range of trim options to choose from: Active, Allure, GT Line, GT Line Premium and GT.

With a larger boot space that the Nissan Qashqai you can be sure that the 3008 has enough room for the whole family and their luggage.

Skoda is a brand known for its practical and affordable family friendly cars.

The Kodiaq was first introduced to the world in 2016, following the success of Skoda’s first SUV the Yeti and has since gone on to be one of the best value for money SUVs on the market. Unsurprising considering its high driving position that offers a good view of the road, accurate steering and well-judged suspension that provide a very comfortable drive.

Larger than Skoda’s Karoq the Kodiaq has seven seats available on the SE model and above, with a sliding middle row to make it even easier to get in and out of the very back.

There’s also an impressive 620 litre storage space when the rear seats are down, and a decent 270 litre space with all seven seats in use.

So, it’s no surprise that the Kodiaq won AutoExpress’ 2018 Large SUV of the year.

Not only is the Kodiaq great for space but it’s also great value for money and for leasing this means you can get some brilliant deals. Check out our best offers here.
