When it comes to the end of your lease you have several options you might want to consider; extending your current lease, purchasing the vehicle, taking out a new lease and depending on what you decide to do you will also need to arrange collection of your current vehicle.

We will usually be in contact around three months before the end of your lease to go through these with you, but you can get in touch with us at any point to discuss your next steps with us.

Extending Your Current Lease:

If you would like to keep your current lease vehicle for a little longer then we may be able to get a quote to extend the lease for you. Most funders will offer formal extension for 6 or 12 months, provided you contact them in time before the end of your lease.

Please note that the cost of the monthly rentals on an extension are not guaranteed to be the same as your contracted rentals. The monthly rental price may be more than you were previously paying.

If you would like to discuss extending your lease just get in touch with our Customer Services Team on 0172232288 or at support@xcitecarleasing.co.uk.

Purchasing Your Current Vehicle:

You have now had your current vehicle for a couple of years and if you decide that you would like to keep it then we can speak to the funder to see whether you can purchase the vehicle. To discuss this just give our Customer Services Team a call or email.

A New Vehicle:

If you would like to look at a new vehicle for when your current lease ends then please get in touch with our Renewals Team on 0330 221 0000 and we can look into the best offers for you.

To do this you'll just need to give our Support Team a call on 0330 221 0000.

Please be aware that you will usually need to give around a week's notice for collections.

Private Number Plates

You might have put a private number plate on the vehicle during the lease, and if you have this will need to be removed before you can arrange collection. Funders cannot collect the car if the retention process has not been completed and the personalised plate is still on the vehicle.

Just like when you added the plate you will need to contact your funder to arrange for this to be removed. For more information on this visit our Private Number Plate Guide.

If you are unsure of your funder's contact number then just give us a call and we can provide this for you.

On the collection date the vehicle will also be inspected and you will be asked to sign and confirm the condition of the vehicle at handover.

After collection your funder will review this and anything noted on the collection report will be compared with their fair wear and tear guidelines. Please scroll down for more information on this.

The vehicle mileage will also be noted at collection, and if you have gone over your contracted mileage allowance then you will be charged for any excess mileage. The cost of this will be in your original contract.

Fair Wear and Tear:

Under the terms of your lease you will agree to return the vehicle in a condition in line with the BVRLA’s Fair Wear and Tear Guidelines.

Each funder has their own guidelines that are based on the BVRLA’s but there may be slight differences so it is best to check your vehicle against your funder’s guidelines as well. They will usually provide a link to these with confirmation of collection, but if you would like to review them before making arrangements then we can request a copy for you.

Fair wear and tear is any acceptable deterioration of the vehicle due to normal usage. The vehicle’s age, mileage and whether it has been suitably looked after during the lease are all considered as part of this.

It does not include damage as a result of a specific event or series of events, such as; impact, inappropriate stowing of items, harsh treatment, negligent acts or omissions.

Please find below a link to the BVRLA guidelines:

End of Lease FAQs

What Happens if I Exceed My Mileage Allowance?

If you have gone over your agreed annual mileage figures then you will be charged according to how many miles over you have gone. This is usually shown in pence per mile and the amount will depend on your specific lease agreement. The excess mileage charge will be based on several different factors so will be different depending on the model, contract mileage allowance and contract length / vehicle age.

One thing to be aware of is that if your lease agreement includes a maintenance package then you will have two charges, an excess mileage charge for the lease itself and a second for the maintenance package.

How Do I Prepare the Car for the End of the Lease?

Ahead of the collection date at the end of your lease, you can take the following steps to ensure everything runs smoothly on the day:

  • Schedule the date and time for the leasing company to come and collect the car
  • Give the car a clean both inside and out
  • Inspect for any damage or wear and tear
  • Remove any personal belongings
  • Make sure nothing is missing
  • Fill up the tank or recharge the battery
  • Ensure that all paperwork is ready and in order

What Paperwork Will I Need?

On the collection day, you’ll need to make sure that all necessary paperwork is returned, which will include:

  • Vehicle and owner's handbook
  • V5 document
  • Up-to-date service history
  • Signed inspection report
  • Valid MOT certificate (if applicable)

What Happens When the Car is Collected?

When the collection date arrives, the vehicle will be inspected for any damage. You’ll be informed of any areas of concern while also being shared on the condition report with any relevant notes. You’ll also be given a form to sign stating that you agree with the report notes and findings.

Once the inspection is done, the car will then be taken away, after which a final invoice will be issued. After any further necessary payments have been made, the contract will end.

What Happens if I Have Damaged the Lease Car?

Some damage is to be expected as part of the wear and tear guidelines, so if the damage falls within the wear and tear policy then there’ll be no extra charge. If the damage exceeds this, there will be a charge involved.

Can I Dispute Any Extra Charges?

You will have the right to dispute any charges that have been added after the final inspection. You’ll likely have to pay for an independent engineer to re-examine the vehicle, who will offer their verdict.
